Graton garden was established from 1983, the
four distinct garden areas as much a chronological as an
environmental differential awareness, the house garden was
established first in 1983 after we purchased the old nursery
property, establishing an orchard and shade house complex.
We then established the middle area (approx 1acre) as a
poultry enclosure surrounded by a 6ft fence to deter foxes,
to no avail, this area was eventually planted as a display
vegetable area, with a propagating structure featuring
recycled old truck windscreens.
In 1990 we had the two water
areas dug along an old creek course resulting in a annual
flood that normally fills and flushes the water areas, this
bottom 3 ½ acres was then established along Edna Walling
lines with meandering pathways inviting continued
exploration, the adjoining 2 acres is a recent purchase from
our fantastic neighbors of many years, we planted this area
together over time (many thanks).
We have a philosophy of
encouraging a holistic approach to the garden, looking at
not just the Flora, but also encouraging the Fauna,
including birds, insects, fungi, frogs and reptilian
inhabitants of the environment.
As plant collectors there is
an extensive collection of many species including, Oaks,
Bamboos, Species and single petal roses, Cistus, Cotoneaster
as well as many others, resulting in a eclectic mix of many
unusual and rarely seen plants.
We hope you will appreciate
that the garden is continually being developed and
constantly evolving, we try to recycle most materials from
the garden by using prunings as natural mulch.
Our vision
for the garden is as future botanical parkland, displaying a
fine and unusual blend of exotic and native Fauna and Flora
